Summer

As we are winding down to the end of Summer 09', what were the highlights? Summer for me has truely not been the same for years. I don't understand, maybe it is the company we spend time with, that do not make our summer as exciting and full of fun as it once were, or maybe I am just getting older. I remember as a child playing double dutch, the jingle of Mr. Softey, not like these imitation trucks that come around now, even as an adult, the best thing of hearing children laugh, scream and play....the sounds of happiness, the sounds of innocence. Where has it all gone? What happened to having a wonderful life? Maybe you can tell me.

  1. Hello Carlene....I believe you are absolutely correct. I along with many of my friends think this summer has been considerably dull. I definitely agree with you...ever sinced I moved to jersey live has never been the same for me...mostly everything seems artificial over here...from the stores to the ice cream trucks...attractions arent the same

  2. Hello Whitney..I am saddened to hear that your change of zip code has made your life a bit uncomfortable and hard to adjust too. However, there is light at the end of ever tunnel...I feel you can manage productive time by going to the library, exercise, clean your room if necessary and start making plans for your future. Instead of thinking of all the cons of your new life, focus on the positive nature of your new zip code...

  3. Good Morning Carlene ...I guess you have a point when it comes to Summer being different. It seems that Summer has been changing over the years.Could that be because of the Ozone Layer? This year the weather is questionable. True we need rain, however the amount we got this Summer surplus our water supply/demand needs. Summer as we knew it was filled with the gay sounds of children's laughter while playing outdoors, visits to the beaches, bus rides to Parks and BBQs and backyard parties sadly it is not so anymore, what happened? Where have the children gone? Have they gone to their parents Summer homes in the "Hamptons", to camps or are parents afraid to let their children out to play, or is it simply geographical? What happen to our freedom as residents of a town/ borough who used to be able to enjoy our home we work hard to afford and maintain. Don't foregt we have our "quality of life" to thank for a great deal of this change. Our Government has created change in our society which makes it hard for us to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Whatever the reason the Summer did not live up to it's name and it was definitely too short. Looking at life in a positive manner is to see your glass half full ...work with what you have and make the best of it ... I'll be talking to you soon.

  6. Dear Carlene, I have very thin hair and I currently wear a low (brush) hair cut. I would like a full head of hair so I can get one of those short styled dos. Is that possible? Can you help me grow a healthy head of hair? Anxiously awaiting your response.

  7. the summer is now filled with being inside and playing video games, or going to the movies, or shopping indoors.
ask any dietician out there and they will tell you Americans are killing themselves with no activity.
America, we are OBESE and loving it for some reason. If you want to see the facts, look at children health records. I rely on the center for disease control and they state
"One of 7 low-income, preschool-aged children is obese, but the obesity epidemic may be stabilizing. The prevalence of obesity in low-income two to four year-olds increased from 12.4 percent in 1998 to 14.5 percent in 2003 but rose to only 14.6 percent in 2008.

In 2008, obesity prevalence was highest among American Indian or Alaska Native (21.2 percent) and Hispanic (18.5 percent) children, and lowest among white (12.6 percent), Asian or Pacific Islander (12.3 percent), and black (11.8 percent) children."

11.8% of Black children in America are obese. I think that percentage is way too high for a healthy future. I see the number increasing to 15% in a few years and soon enough we will have 1 in 4 children 30+ pounds overweight.

I do not have a solution to this disease, but I do have a concern and a focus.
They say if you want to change the world, you have to start with yourself.
Being a 28 year old, who is probably 50+ pounds overweight, I am in the "obese" category as well. Sad but true, I admit, but I am working on it. Some may say I can do more and work harder and I agree with them. My goal was to lose 20-30 pounds this summer and guess what the summer is over and I have gained weight!

As a amateur chef, I think I need to stay focused to my goals and work on them daily. So what is my activity today? If it were up to me, I would treadmill daily, but I do not have the luxury of space to put one in my apartment. So that means trekking to the GYM! ahhh.

In the end, my goal is to get in shape and lose more weight. I feel like I am in shape, as I can run, jump and walk for long distances, but still the scale says I need to lose weight for my future or else diseases will appear.

What can you do? Encourage your friends and peers to be active. Invite them to fun activities outdoors and just get out of the house.

My plan is to create a children's cooking program where we teach our children from young how to make the right decisions for their bodies, not just where food is concerned, but also where activity is concerned.

  8. Hello Beverly...for the fatty eyelids, I suggest using "Clarins Eye Contour Gel" for regular treatments and "Clarins Advanced Extra-Firming Eye Contour Serum", for advanced stages of muscle deteriation around your eyes and eyelids. You can also try a fairly new product by CLINIQUE "all about eyes". Before doing this you need to cleanse your skin. Use CLINIQUE's 3 step face type; cleaner, clarifying liquid and moisturizer. Please make sure and use a good amount of the moisturizer to the face before going to bed at night, a well moisturized face at night brings vibrant skin in the morning. Also during the change of season's you need to have your skin tested for the correct formula, as skin changes during each season. Testing can be done when you buy the 3 Step kit. As far as the laugh lines, I suggest more smiling and less frowning. It takes more face muscles to frown than smile. "Clarins Extra-Firming Tightening Lift Botanical Serum" or "CLINIQUE youth surge", are two products I suggest. However do remember with these products, you will only see results when used as directed and applied nightly. Please be advised these products will not give you 18 years old skin, however it will give you a fresh and brighter look.

  9. Hello Beverly...so I hear you want to start or get a new hairstlye. Well you have to start at the bottom since your hair is so short. My suggestions to you is this; when growing your hair out, you will have to know that you will go through the "in-between styles stage". What this means is that your hair would not be considered long, and at some point not short as your regular style. So what you need to do is figure out if you would like to have hair enhancers i.e (weaves, braids or wigs) preferably short while the hair is under re-construction. Now that the fall is coming, the heat would not be an uncomfortable factor in hair enhancements. If you wear a stocking cap weave and cut it into a short-styled cut as your natural hair starts growing out under the stocking cap, this will hide the fact that your hair has no style, shape, or fire. Clearly this would be best if you do not want to make a drastic change in you hair so those on the outside would not know you have hair additions. You should grow your hair out until it covers your scalp, then get the stocking cap weave in a similar cut to your desired cut. Make sure to wash at least every week or no later than every two weeks, as clean hair grows the healthiest. Condition and treat your hair with "Mizani, Hydrafuse intense moisture treatment" and "Mizani, Kerafuse intense strengthening treatment.

  10. Hello Camille...I guess you are very about accurate about the obesity epidemic of children and in America. However weight gain can be a thing of the past. Having the knowlegge to know that you want to loose weight is the first step to your goal. It is not easy, however I have seen successful weight loss stories for those who had supporters in their weight loss goal. How about having a gym appointment with a partner every day at a specific time . For one that will be your daily commitment and a start.
